Nakuru Town West MP Samuel Arama has threatened to push for the transfer of school principals in his constituency who have the tendency of sending students home to collect lunch fees.
Speaking on Monday at Nakuru Town West CDF offices during the disbursement of bursary funds worth Sh5.3 million, the legislator said it was wrong for students to be sent home over petty reasons.
The lawmaker said some school heads in the region are only interested in collecting money from poor parents yet the government has given funds to schools which should be used to provide lunch for the students.
He added that he will follow up the matter with education stakeholders and the local administrators to ensure that every child is in school.
“It is wrong for school heads to send students at home over petty issues like lunch fee yet the government has paid school fees. We shall move to such schools and demand that such heads are transferred because they are doing so since they have overstayed in the schools,” said Arama.
Over 500 students benefited from the bursary funds with priority being given to orphans and needy students.
The MP noted that the funds will be disbursed in batches with the last disbursement set to benefit a similar number of students.
So far Sh13 million has been disbursed in the form of bursary funds to needy students in Nakuru Town West Constituency.
“We are targeting to have disbursed a total Sh23 million for this financial year in Nakuru Town West,” said Arama.
The MP further refuted claims that the issuance of bursary funds in Nakuru Town West is based on tribalism and nepotism, noting that there is fairness in the issuance of the funds with everyone having to undergo vetting before approval.
“Every constituent is welcomed to apply for the bursary funds which are issued in a fair way. We do not ask whether you voted for me or not," said Arama.
