The DP has been busy crafting alliances across the country and among regions he is keen on bagging include Coast, Western as well as Central.

Although a pact he signed with President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2013 says he will succeed the commander in chief in 2022, such an arrangement seems to be far from coming.

Central region which was expected to be an easy go for the DP is slowly drifting away from him.

Several delegations from Central Kenya have been frequenting opposition chief Raila Odinga's Capitol Hill office and it is not yet clear why such delegations are seeing the former PM in such alarming numbers.

There are claims that Raila may vie for the presidency in 2022, and so, clearly, Central in torn between supporting Raila or Ruto. The last of Central Kenya's delegation to meet Raila came from Meru and the meeting took place on Tuesday.

In Coast, the DP recently managed to get support from a cross-section of leaders including Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi as well as a dozen MPs including outspoken Aisha Jumwa (Malindi).

On Wednesday, however, Ruto suffered a mega blow as Kingi, a man he trusted would be his point-man in Coast made a U-turn and returned to Raila's camp. Kingi said he would work with Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho in ensuring Coast remain united.

In Western, the region is still unclear on whether it will wholly support the DP.

Raila scooped majority Parliamentary seat in Western on August 8th last year and going by that statistic, the region may still overwhelmingly, just like in 2007, 2013 and 2017 voted for the former Langata MP.

Ruto may only be sure of Rift Valley's support. However, this will not guarantee him the presidency in 2022. And in Rift Valley, too, he may not be guaranteed of full support because of the Gideon Moi factor. The senator is also eyeing the presidency in 2022.

Such is the challenge that the DP is facing politicking in a country where voters are so unpredictable that he may not actually not know now whether he will be in government or in the official opposition in 2022.
