Speaking in Murang’a town on Monday, Chege said that scrapping the women rep seat will be a blow to women, youth and marginalised groups.

She said that those advocating for the seat to be scrapped are playing politics, adding that the women rep seat has played a key role since the inception of devolution.

“I think the women rep seat is more vibrant even than the MPs in terms of pushing development agenda at the grassroots," she said.

The lawmaker further said that she will fight any attempt to have the seat abolished.

She said that instead of scrapping the seat the government should increase budgetary funding to women representatives to help them actualise the agenda of youth, women and marginalised groups.

Uasin Gishu Women Rep Gladys Shollei is among politicians who have been calling for the scrapping of the seat.

Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria is also supporting the calls to have the seat scrapped.
