A section of lawmakers was reportedly handed Ksh10, 000 bribes to shoot down a probe into the contraband sugar imported into the nation, as was claimed by a group of their colleagues.

In an interview on Radio Maisha’s ‘Bunge La Maisha’ on Thursday morning, Funyula lawmaker Wilberforce Ojiambo claimed that lawmakers have since become scared of using the washrooms for fear of being implicated in a new bribery claim.

‘’Wengine wetu hadi tumeogopa kuenda msalani tusije tukaambiwa tumeenda kula mlungula (some of us are scared of using the washrooms after the allegations),’’ he said.

Kiambu Women Representative Gathoni Muchomba claimed that she heard some of the female lawmakers discussing the amounts they were given in the toilets in the August 9 incident.

“When I went to the toilet, I heard people saying they had been given Sh10,000 by Wajir Women Representative Fatuma Gedi to shoot down the sugar report. Another responded, 'She should have given you Sh30,000.' Some were even saying they had been given money for other members,’’ she was quoted by the Standard.

The report was tabled by the Parliamentary Committee on Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Committee under its Chairman Kanini Kega who is also the Kieni lawmaker.
