The Ogiek community living in Tarakwa ward of Kesses constituency in Uasin Gishu county now have a reason to smile.
This is after they were handed title deeds for their land, a document they have been looking for for the past several decades.
During the event that was presided over by the National Assembly speaker Justine Muturi in Kiborom village, 2,000 title deeds were handed over to the community.
Speaking during the event area Member of Parliament Dr Swarup Mishra said he is poised to ensure that all Kesses residents are in possession of title deeds.
"Today we have officially issued 2000 title deeds to Ogiek community in Cheboror farm going down in Kenyan history. The process will continue until everyone else has this crucial document," said Mishra.
"The Ogiek are now the rightful owners of the land they occupy and they can now develop it," he added.
Lands Cabinet Secretary Farida Karonei who also attended the event said the Jubilee government was committed to ensuring Kenyans have title deeds for the land they own.
She revealed that within the next 5 months, her ministry would be issuing 350,000 title deeds under the Rapid Results Initiative (RRI) with Uasin Gishu locals also set to benefit.
Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago on his part challenged locals who have been handed the title deed not to sell the land but instead focus on developing it.
During the event, Mishra also gave out 100 cows to women from Tarakwa ward as well as flagging off beneficiaries of beneficiaries who will be going to India to study as well as driving school scholarships.
