The incident happened on Thursday in Oyugis, Homa Bay County.

According to the girl’s mother, Gladys Atieno, her daughter stole onions from their neighbor who threatened to bewitch the thief.

“My daughter mistakenly harvested the neighbour’s onions from the farm. We used the onions before the owner reported that someone stole the onions. My daughter revealed to me that she is the one who harvested the onions and went to the neighbour to inform him that it is my daughter who harvested the onions,” she said.

Atieno said the neighbour refused to forgive her daughter and threatened to bewitch 'whoever' stole the onions.

“She started developing a swollen stomach and I rushed her to Oyugis hospital. I am pleading with my neighbour to have mercy on her and forgive her so that she can get out of the hospital to report to school,” she pleaded.

Adriano Ouma, an elder said talks have commenced ensuring the neighbour removes any spells she might have used to get the girl healed.

Stanley Okoth, a local chief warned parents against allowing their children to steal saying they risk arrest and prosecution.

Okoth said locals must believe in prayers and stop engaging g in ungodly activities.
