Kisumu county bodaboda riders’ association heads have rejected the new tax order imposed by the county CEC Finance, Nerry Achar.
Jacob Ochieng, the lakeside bodaboda operators’ boss said his office was not informed of the new taxation, adding that no consultation was done by Kisumu county finance boss Nerry Achar.
“We were not informed of the new bodaboda taxation law, therefore we are not ready for it,” Jacob Ochieng said.
His sentiments were echoed by his deputy who mans Muhoroni sub-county bodaboda riders association Emmanuel Obiero Oluoch. According to Oluoch, the Achar’s order was uncalled for, adding that there is a need for dialogue.
“Nowadays there is public participation and the county minister should ensure that is done before imposing the new taxation law,” He said.
Nerry Achar on Friday gave a directive to all bodaboda operators within Kisumu to start paying levies from June 1, saying defaulters will be penalized.
“We shall penalize the defaulters since everyone pay taxes even mama mboga. The tax collected will help the county to erect bodaboda shades and improve roads,” Achar said.
While giving orders Achar told the bodaboda riders to visit Kisumu City Hall on June 3 and buy stickers for Ksh 20 which will allow them to operate smoothly within the city.
Achar further revealed that a sticker will cost Ksh 20 a day, or alternatively Ksh 500 per month, giving the bodaboda riders two options including monthly subscription and daily subscription.
