Two diplomats were involved in a road accident along Mombasa road at Lukenya area in Athi River, Machakos County on Tuesday evening.
They are Zambia High Commissioner to Kenya Brenda Muntemba and her Botswana counterpart Duke Lephoko.
Preliminary reports indicate that the duo sustained injuries after Mudenda's car collided head-on with an oncoming lorry.
Lephoko's car, which was following closely, then rammed into the stalled vehicle.
They were on their way to Nairobi from a meeting at Maanzoni Lodge in Athi River, a short distance from the scene of the incident.
The two and their drivers were rushed to the Machakos Level 5 Hospital for treatment.
Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua visited the diplomats at the hospital and ensured they were undergoing treatment before he left the facility.
“I have just left Machakos Level 5 referral hospital after ensuring Zambian Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Brenda Mudenda & diplomat Kama Wasa are out of danger. They’ve undergone major abdominal surgeries undertaken by Senior Dr. Joab Osumba, Dr. Eliud Aluvala & anesthetist J. Mutunga,” Mutua tweeted on Tuesday night.
He said the diplomats were out of danger.
“The patients are now being stabilized in the new Machakos Hospital ICU. They will require more surgeries later after their physiology improves.
One of their drivers Joseph Kariithi Ngutu, is also out of danger, though with fractured arms and broken leg, after the accident,” he added.
