Reports indicate that security personnel have already arrested five suspects in connection with the incident.

The suspects reportedly dug a deep tunnel at the firm before they managed to access the banking hall.

A night guard who was manning the facility on the night of the robbery, together with four other employees of Itoleka Financial Services Association Mutune branch, Kitui Central, have been arrested in connection with the robbery.

The guard has, however, said that he has no connection with the incident and never noticed the events as they unfolded leaving the firm in a state of limbo.

The employees allegedly opted to keep the cash in their boxes instead of the safes in the banking hall, as a scheme to siphon the same later on.

Confirming the incident, Kitui Central Deputy OCPD Edward Legei said the guard discovered the tunnel in the morning, before informing them of the occurrence.

“The night guard told the police that as he was patrolling the bank he saw a tunnel,” he said as quoted by Nation.
