Incidentally, Odinga's trip comes slightly a month after President Uhuru Kenyatta toured Beijing for various bilateral talks.

In a statement, his spokesman Dennis Onyango said: "Raila Odinga has left the country for a short visit to the People’s Republic of China.Hon. Odinga left Nairobi shortly after 5 pm today, October 13, 2018.

Before leaving, Mr. Odinga was chief guest at the 18thGraduation Ceremony of the Kenya Methodist University in Meru.He returns to the country on Tuesday next week."

His trip comes amid escalating concerns over the level of debt created by Jubilee administration in which China has been linked directly.

Since 2013, Uhuru has heavily relied on the communist country for infrastructural development with the multi-billion SGR project being on top of his agenda.

The country's level of debt has hit the highest of Sh5 trillion, with Kenyans directly blaming Uhuru of over-borrowing from Beijing.

It is not however clear whether Raila's trip is official or personal given his latest warm relationship with Uhuru.
