HIV and AIDS is spreading at an alarming rate among teenagers and gay couples in Kilifi County.
Officials revealed the shocking data on December 1, 2018, World AIDS Day.
According to Anisa Omar, Kilifi County Health CeC, one gay person is HIV positive in every four gays. She said the number is ever rising despite several measures they have taken to control the menace.
Omar said that their statistics reveal that Malindi town has 12,000 gay people most of whom abuse drugs. 4,000 members of this group are HIV positive. She stated that the county has started distributing lubricants and condoms to control HIV and AIDS spread in the county.
She added that teenagers between 16-25 years accounted for 19% of new HIV infections recorded.
She blamed this on the love of raw sex by teens who are not aware of the dangers that accompany it. High poverty levels and the county’s nightlife were also blamed for the infections.
Omar said that gays are more vulnerable due to their diversion of pleasure zones.
