Gedi says that referendum is not a priority for Kenyans now.

According to Gedi, the referendum will be costly and will push Kenyans into more economic hardships.

Gedi said that the referendum debate should be halted and elected leaders focus on service delivery.

The Jubilee MP said that the country has not recovered from the August 8, 2017, general election and referendum should not be entertained.

She further claimed that the push for a referendum is not in the interests of Kenyans.

“I don’t think it is the right time to have a constitutional referendum and as elected leaders, we must think and focus on serving the electorate,” she said in Garissa Town on Saturday.

Gedi said that referendum push to have more political seats is ill-advised and will push the country into economic strains in terms of the wage bill.

She said that the review should be encouraged if it is in the interests of common Kenyans and not selfish politicians.

“It can come at a later stage and with the interests of Kenyans in mind,” she added.

A section of politicians has opposed Raila Odinga’s referendum push.

Raila, however, insists that the referendum is unstoppable.

The former Prime Minister has been quoted saying that referendum was part of his handshake deal with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

On Saturday, Deputy President William Ruto made a surprising move after he supported calls for a constitutional review.

He, however, took issue in the manner in which some politicians are drumming support for the plebiscite.

A section of politicians among them Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and ANC Party leader Musalia Mudavadi has opposed the referendum push.
