North Eastern region is one of the regions in the country that has experienced deadly terror activities in recent years.
Garissa and Mandera have witnessed deadly attacks among them the April 2, 2015 attack at Garissa University College that left at least 147 students dead and others injured.
Terror militants have been launching attacks in some parts of North Eastern even as the government tightens security.
As the government tightens the noose on the war against terrorism, here are prominent Kenyans who were once caught up in terror attacks but survived to tell the story.
1. Ali Roba
The second-term Mandera governor has been caught up in several suspected terror attacks.
In March 2015, the governor narrowly escaped death when one vehicle in his convoy ran over an Improvised Electronic Device (IED) in Mandera.
The incident left five of his security officers dead.
In July 2015, the governor also survived another suspected Al-Shabaab attack when his convoy was spread with bullets.
The Mandera governor has been vocal castigating terrorism activities.
2. Noordin Haji
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji was caught up in the September 21, 2013 terror attack at the West-gate mall in Nairobi.
The Garissa-born DPP had gone shopping at Westgate Mall when terrorists struck.
Haji was forced to hide in a washroom with other Kenyans as they waited for help.
Luckily, he was rescued after hours of tensions.
Sixty-seven people died in the Westgate attack and others injured.
3. Yusuf Hassan
On December 7, 2012, the Kamukunji MP narrowly survived a grenade attack in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area.
The MP was meeting his constituents at the Hidaya Community center in Eastleigh when a grenade was hurled at the crowd.
The attack claimed the lives of seven people and injured others.
The MP was among those injured and it took him time to recover.
The government has since heightened security with the deployment of the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) to Somalia.
Security has also been tightened in North Eastern and other parts of the country as the government vows to smoke out terror agents and their networks.
