In 1953, Maiyoro became the first Kenyan to professionally compete in Athletics during the Indian Ocean games held at Madagascar where he won a gold medal despite joining late in the race.

Subsequently, Maiyoro participated in 1954 Commonwealth games finishing fourth in 5,000 meters before becoming the first regular in 1956 and 1960 Olympic Games.

“I saw him in the hospital in great pain. I managed to talk to him and he is not well. He is even struggling to pay his bills. It is really saddening to see such a legend struggling,” said blogger Kefa Onyinkwa.

A doctor in the hospital who declined to be named said: “He has been here since morning. We are carrying tests on him. For now he remains admitted. I am told he can’t raise bills for admission.”

Upon his retirement, Maiyoro worked at Nyamira District as a clerk before being appointed as one of managers of Gusii stadium, then serving Kisii and Nyamira Counties.

He introduced legendary Naphtali Temu and Charles Asati, both who managed to separately win Olympic Gold Medals.
