A chief has been charged in court for reportedly interfering with the government’s registration of National Integrated Identity Management System (NIIMS) number.
The chief is said to have disappeared with the electronic gadget used for the exercise.
When a manhunt was launched by local administrators, he was found in a local bar inebriated.
Gerald Maina Ndirangu, the Gikandu sub-location chief in Murang’a, was charged before Murang’a Principal Magistrate Edwin Nyaga on Thursday.
The prosecution caused a stir in court as he prosecuted Ndirangu that on diverse dates between April 5 and 7, he took the electronic gadget causing inconveniences.
He was later found in a local bar drinking alcohol, the court as told. The suspect was released on a Sh100,000 bond.
The case will be heard on June 14.
When Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’I had of the incident, he directed the administrator be fired immediately.
The NIIMS registration is a serious project by the government bearing in mind that President Uhuru Kenyatta himself launched its registration.
The government has also directed that no one will be issued with a passport or renews without the number.
Registration is being done to every Kenyan from the age of six.
Children need their birth certificates to register while adults are required to utter their original ID cards.
