Senator Millicent Omanga has defended HELB loan defaulters after Education CS Amina Mohamed said the ministry will collaborate with security agencies to arrest and prosecute Kenyans who have failed to settle debts.
Omanga said the idea of hunting down loan defaulters is ill advised, impolitic and injudicious.
"So we want to arrest and probably jail 74,000 HELB loan defaulters. In the eyes of those who want to arrest them, they're worse than the thieves who are milking this country dry. Well, this is a bad joke," she wrote on her Facebook page on Thursday.
According to the vocal senator, those who are yet to service their HELB loans are jobless youths who've been tarmacking for years without hope of landing a job.
"They get notification text from HELB to start repaying their loans even before they remove the graduation gown. When they knock officers to apply for jobs, they are ridiculed that they're half-baked graduates and those who are kind enough tell them you didn't go to school to get job, create one," she added.
She urged Csy Amina to bring reforms in the education sector but, not arresting HELB loan defaulters.
