Lungalunga MP Khatib Mwashetani has condemned an incident where police officers in Perani town allegedly beat up bodaboda operators and arrested some over alleged non-compliance with traffic regulations.
The lawmaker attended a security meeting in Perani town together with area MCA Yusuf Mbwana, OCPD and Sub-county Deputy County Commissioner Mr. Biwot on Friday where he made the statement.
"I condemn with the strongest terms the police use of force on innocent people in Perani earlier this week. I demand that the police stop beating people in Lungalunga because it is against the law," he said.
Mwashetani agreed with the OCPD and DCC that a meeting be convened next week with the security apparatus in Lungalunga "to iron out the problems so that the people and bodaboda riders are not harassed by the police again."
Leaders present agreed that all bodabodas would be released unconditionally and the harassment to be stopped immediately until May to give the riders time to comply with the law.
"I promise to petition the police and whoever gave the authority so that action is taken and those responsible are brought to book," said the lawmaker on Friday.
A similar case was witnessed in Jomvu Sub-county, Mombasa where bodaboda operators accused the police of harassment especially during the night.
Police bosses in Mombasa had banned bodaboda operations as from 8 pm, saying criminal elements use bodabodas to engage in criminal activities.
