The suspect identified as David Wanjiru Mwai alias Mwas allegedly committed suicide at the Parklands police cells on Thursday.

According to police officers who preferred anonymity, the suspect was remanded at Parklands Police Station cells together with several other suspects who were arrested after they were linked into the shooting of Mr Mukhtar.

Mwai who was a key suspect used clothes to commit suicide in the cells where he was being held together with six others but in separate cells.

The other suspects who saw Mwai hanging himself banged the door of the cells to try and get the attention of a police officer who was on duty at the report office.

The officer said at first he thought the suspects in the cells were singing but upon checking, he realized that Mwai had hanged himself.

The officer then raised the alarm and other officers rushed Mwai to the nearby MP Shah Hospital for attention where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Some of the officers at the police station were however not convinced that Mwai committed suicide.

“He might as well been killed. We will see more drama in this issue,” said an officer at the station as quoted by standardmedia.co.ke.

Mwai is said to be the person who pulled the trigger on Mr Mukhtar critically injuring him on August 19.

The former Garissa CEC was shot in the head and left for dead outside a hotel in Kileleshwa, Nairobi.

Mr Mukhtar was rushed to Nairobi Hospital where he was admitted in critical condition and he is still in ICU.
