A team of Standard Media Group journalists were on Monday attacked while on duty in Machakos County.
Sources at the Standard say a driver, cameraman- Bonny Magana and KTN News reporter Caroline Bii were among those who were injured while on an assignment in Masii.
The three are confirmed to be sustaining injuries after the encounter that was staged by students at St Stephens Girls secondary school.
"We went to the school in the company of a parent whose daughter had disappeared from the school in March. The school had not given her any details about the daughter's whereabouts and when she asked the school director, they released the students from their classes.
"The girls started beating and they have even torched the car we were using. They have also destroyed a camera worth Sh2.5 Million. Bonny was trying to safeguard it but the girls overwhelmed us," the driver who also sustained injuries in the attack told Hivisasa on phone.
At the time of publishing the article, Magana, Bii and the driver were at a private medical facility awaiting assessment.
The school's principal had attempted to block the cameraman from accessing the premises only to direct the journalists to the director's office that is away from the institution.
The reporters declined to visit the director's office, demanding that the management turn for their inquest on the student's disappearance given they had admitted being only a few kilometres away from the school.
At the school staffroom, teachers covered their faces while some left for class, only for the students to be heard chanting, demanding that the press leave their compound.
"It appears the school principal incited the students to commit the act. They were attacked and sustained serious injuries. The girls were using stones. The cameraman has injuries and was bleeding from the face and arms. It appears the rowdy students were biting him as he clung on his tools of the trade," the victims' colleague told Hivisasa on phone.
