A section of politicians from Mount Kenya region has come out to defend Deputy President William Ruto over corruption accusations.
The DP has been on the receiving end after he was linked to the alleged theft of Sh21 billion meant for construction of two dams in Elgeyo-Marakwet County.
Led by Kandara Member of Parliament Alice Wahome, the leaders said the war against corruption has been skewed to demonise Ruto with an aim of scuttling his political ambitions.
"There has been a narrative to heap all these corruption issues on the Office of the Deputy President and the people around him," she said on Monday during a political show on NTV.
Expressing similar sentiments, Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni said calls by some opposition lawmakers for Ruto to step aside over the Arror and Kimwarer dam projects scandal were unnecessary and asked his colleagues not to politicise the war on graft.
"We must also tone down the heavy political statements that people are saying. The DP should not resign over this, the government should not resign over this. We must continue fighting corruption," Kioni said.
Ruto has maintained that only Sh7 billion was in question concerning the controversial dams and assured Kenyans that no coin will be lost in the implementation of the mega projects.
His opponents led by ODM leader Raila Odinga have questioned why the DP has rushed to contradict the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti before he issues a conclusive report on the scandal.
However, Wahome said the Jubilee deputy party leader should not be put to task over his remarks, saying as the second in command, he was in a position to issue reliable information.
"The Deputy President, from where he sits, is extremely well-informed in terms of how much has been spent and for what purpose," said the Kandara legislator.
Finance Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich will on Tuesday appear before the DCI to shed more light on the saga which has seen political temperatures in the country rise to a new high.
