The past few weeks have seen a number of learning institutions in the Nyanza region, and the country at large being closed indefinitely over student unrest.

In Nyanza five schools have been closed in the last one week, hindering learning activities at a time when the KCSE exam in drawing near.

On Tuesday, Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed, and a number of stakeholders from her ministry, visited several affected schools in the county.

Speaking at Kisumu Girls High School, CS Mohamed warned students that the government was adopting tough measures to curb rowdy students.

She noted that students need to focus on what’s important and avoid activities that could affect their future.

In a statement shared by Deputy Governor Ochieng Owili, the County Government of Kisumu agreed to partner with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to determine the causes of student unrest.

"I called on the students to refrain from such activities citing that anyone involved would be charged if found guilty, comments echoed earlier by Madam Amina," Dr Owili posted.

Dr Owili further noted that discussions were underway to have to CCTV cameras installed in schools as a remedy to prevent student unrest.
