A section of traders at the Eldoret hawkers' market are up in arms over the Uasin Gishu County government's failure to get rid of a dumpsite that has messed up their business environment.
The traders claim the dumpsite which is near the market has contributed to their deteriorating business activities.
Francis Omweri, a businessman who spoke to hivisasa.com said that they have occasionally appealed to the relevant county agencies including Environment and Sanitation department to handle the matter but nothing has been done yet.
“We have submitted our complaints to the county government, it seems it does not care about our health and the businesses that contribute revenues to the county,” Omweri said recounting that street children are now being used by the traders to dispose litters from their business premises.
The trader further noted that adversely affected premises are the food cafés and groceries which has forced tenants to close the businesses due to disgusting condition exposed by the mundane hip of rubbish.
He urged the county government to take immediate responsive action to alleviate the situation.
“This is the season where businesses could be thriving but it is imminently to be closed if the situation remains constant,” said Omweri.
Julius Sing’oei, a caretaker of a section of Eldoret market said that youths who have recently ventured into business to upgrade their living standard are frustrated in the pathetic environment that has discouraged customers from buying goods and services leaving them counting loses.
“Our youths who seek for self-employment will soon close their businesses because of inconvenient environment condition disadvantaging their daily activities,” Sing’oei said adding that they have resorted to blocking some door gates to minimize loses.
