Former Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Farah Maalim has asked Kenyans to be ready for a different government structure come 2022.
According to Maalim, a constitutional change will do away with presidential elections by installing a parliamentary system.
“Take it from me. There won’t be presidential elections in 2022. We shall amend the constitution to change the executive to a parliamentary system. Government will come from partliament and counties will be reduced to viable 14, 15 or 16,” he wrote.
This could make several candidates lose millions because some have already started campaigning.
Presidential hopefuls have started traversing the nation drumming up support.
Those who have publicly announced their desire to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta are Governors Alfred Mutua, Wycliffe Oparanya and Hassan Joho. Other candidates are Ford Kenya Party leader Moses Wetang’ula, Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka.
They will face stiff competition from Deputy President William Ruto if a parliamentary system is not adopted.
Ruto’s campaigns have landed his supporters at the coast in trouble.
Orange Democratic Movement is on the verge of dismissing Msambweni MP Suleiman Dori and his Malindi counterpart Aisha Jumwa for supporting DP Ruto’s 200 bid.
