Children are a blessing to the parents. Most women deliver without any form of complications. However, this doesn't mean that these women should not educate themselves on the various health complications that affect expectant mothers. Here are four common pregnancy complications you must be aware of.
1. Miscarriage
Some women lose their children before birth. Miscarriages occur mostly within the first 20 weeks after a woman becomes pregnant. It is believed that the complications are caused by chromosomal abnormalities that prevent the development of the embryo. Miscarriages are often characterised by spotting or vaginal bleeding.
2. Premature birth
There are some women who deliver their babies before they get to the 37th week of pregnancy. If this occurs, it means your baby has been born prematurely. If you happen to go into premature labour, it is advisable to go to a recognised health facility as premature birth can cause medical complications for the baby.
3. Ectopic pregnancy
This occurs when the fertilised egg is implanted outside the uterus, in most cases in the fallopian tube. The condition can lead to internal bleeding as the embryo can rapture the tubes as it continues to grow. It is recommended to reach out to a doctor once you realise something is wrong.
4. Preeclampsia
More than five per cent of women suffer from this condition. Women with high blood pressure and protein levels after 20 weeks of pregnancy are at a higher risk of being diagnosed with the condition. In cases where one is diagnosed with severe preeclampsia, the mother will be forced to deliver early to avoid health complications.
