Ms. Bernadette Ogega, a newly crowned Miss Tourism Nyamira County, may have to wait longer for her confirmation as genuine winner.
News about her victory were made public on Miss Tourism, Kenya Facebook page, an act that caught many residents unaware.
"I have never seen such an event being held in the county this year. Organisers must have made money from it," protested Purity Bisieri.
Another resident, John Mokaya said: "Things done in secrecy as usual. Theft is real and I wonder why EACC has never bothered visiting Nyamira."
A group of activists led by Sammy Charana stormed in Trade and Tourism minister Peter Muga's offices on Monday demanding answers over the mysterious event.
In his defense, Mr. Muga, formerly with CPSB before joining cabinet, denied knowledge of such an event.
"Honestly I have never known about it. I have also seen it on social media and I think director or Chief Officer are behind it."
A source privy to the unfolding scandal says it was done hastily in Nairobi with only few county workers aware of it.
"They held it in secrecy last week and I don't know why. Basically something is not right," he said.
Preliminary investigations shows that no such event was held in the county further throwing the minister in an awkward situation.
Until going to press, Ms. Ogega, whose name has shocked residents, could not reply to calls for clarification.
