With 2022 succession politics gaining momentum, it is a fact that Deputy President William Ruto, at the moment, remains the most likely to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta on condition that no amendments come into being before the next electioneering period.
As the situation now stands, Uhuru and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga have already affirmed their support on the proposed referendum, claiming it is the only way to end 'take-it-all' power.
On his part, DP Ruto and his close allies are, too, on record vowing to oppose the referendum calls. However, one thing could become a reality; if Ruto successfully opposes the referendum, then it could be a reality that he will be the country's fifth president.
Considering the 2010 referendum, Ruto opposed the proposed constitutional amendments where he earned big political milestones despite the fact that lost in the bid.
Therefore, if the upcoming referendum fails, Ruto will have jumped over the biggest hurdle ever as it will mean Uhuru will be ineligible to contest, save for Raila Odinga who is yet to declare stand.
The victory could also mean he has the compact majority with him, a thing that could translate into votes come 2022, the next electioneering year.
