The famous March 9th handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and NASA principal Raila Odinga seems to have spoiled the good relationship which existed between President Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto as well as Central and the Rift Valley region.
Since then, every political move by the president would raise suspicion and concern from the Rift Valley and political commentators. This is because it was expected that Uhuru would remain loyal and honour his promise to DP Ruto and his home region of endorsing him and rallying the GEMA community behind his 2022 presidential race.
It is important to note that Uhuru has not publicly said anything about the endorsement as the two leaders have always avoided the debate on 2022 succession politics and maintained that it is not yet time for campaigns.
The appointment of Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiangi by President Kenyatta Tuesday to chair a committee mandated to supervise all government projects, including the Jubilee government’s legacy-driven 'Big Four' elicited mixed reactions from Kenyans.
This also sent a wave of suspicion to Ruto’s home region as a majority of residents and leaders felt that the man from Sugoi was being ‘demoted' from his previous job.
The move has also increased the fear that the president might fail to honour the alleged 2013 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between him and the DP.
