With an estimated population of over four million people, Kenya’s capital, Nairobi is one of its kind.

It has come a long way from being a railway workers' depot in 1899 to showcase rise, exponential growth and development.

It is the ‘London’ of the East African Community hosting hundreds of international companies and regional headquarters of different organisations.

With its fast and glamorous life, the city under the sun has three categories of people -- Nairobi city citizens, Nairobi city commuters, and Nairobi city comers – all of whom give the city its trends.

1. Nairobi city citizens

These group of people are natives of the city. They were born and bred here and probably, will be buried here.

Even with the ever-changing speed of life in the city, people in this group see nothing fascinating in their native city because they have grown to witness madness in the capital and rapid rate of development.

They are no longer amused by the statutes erected in the streets of Nairobi like that of Mau Mau veteran Dedan Kimathi or that imposing "fimbo ya Nyayo" statue along Uhuru Highway.

2. Nairobi city commuters

This group has two kinds of people, a hustler and just an average citizen who comes into the city and leaves for both business and pleasure.

Then, there is the hustler who takes in all the fuel fumes from hundreds of vehicles on the roads of Nairobi while scouting for a job. This is a person who is subjected to wear and tear by the unforgiving nature of the city -- has worn several pairs of shoes and they wear out while looking for a job.

3. Nairobi city comers

This is the third group of Nairobians accounting for the city’s general amnesia, its political demeanour as well as its dedication to a lifetime of individual achievement.

Nairobi city comers are natives of other places within the country but they come to Nairobi in search of greener pastures but still maintain their traditional roots upcountry.

They run all sorts of businesses, from carpentry, garages, corporates e.t.c.

With its exuberance of youth and excitement of a new life, the ‘comers’ devour the city with virgin eyes of adventure, generating heat and steam that turn the wheels of the economy in Kenya.
