Kalonzo has hailed Mawathe's win saying it was well-deserved.

"Congratulations Hon. Julius Mawathe for the well-deserved win,  now serve Embakasi South people," the Wiper party boss posted on his Facebook page.

Mawathe clinched the Embakasi South by-election garnering 21,628 votes to defeat his closest rival, Irshard Sumra of the Orange Democratic  Movement (ODM) Party who managed to get 7,988 votes.

Sumra had been rated as the frontrunner.

The ODM candidate, however, conceded defeat as votes were being tallied.

He congratulated Mawathe saying that he is ready to work with him to push for development in the constituency.

The ODM candidate while conceding defeat pleaded with his supporters to remain peaceful.

Sumra told his supporters that there is always a chance for next time.

He thanked ODM leader Raila Odinga and party officials for standing with him and leading his campaigns.

The Embakasi South by-election was marred by low voter turn out and allegations of voter intimidation and bribery.

Fifteen candidates contested for the seat that fell vacant when the Supreme Court nullified Mawathe's victory on grounds that it was not free and fair.
