A Nyanza legislature has hit out at Education CS professor George Magoha over his authoritative approach of handling the ministry.
Uriri MP Mark Nyamita said Magoha should listen to hues and cries of teachers, especially in the implementation of the competency-based curriculum to ensure it is successful.
He said it was unfortunate for Magoha to think that taking “a lump sum of teachers in a small classroom to be ready to work,” will not see the success of the new curriculum.
He said when teachers complain of his style of leadership then parliament may be forced to impeach him.
He was addressing teachers at Ayego centre in Uriri constituency ahead of issuing of bursaries scheduled for next week in 19 sub-locations in Uriri Sub County.
Speaking through the Kenya Union of Teachers officials, teachers said apart from low book ratio, the number of teachers compared to pupils especially in large institutions will derail implementation of the curriculum.
“We are shocked that has suddenly chosen to train teachers for the curriculum to pick in the second term of an academic year, while throughout the years it had gone through,” Omwaga said.
“Even after the seminars with glaring errors on the uptake, the new curriculum will fail as there are no books in schools,” Omwaga added.
In August and December this year another 68,490 will be trained in each of the school holidays, which Macharia said will reach a total of 228,3000 teachers trained by December.
Implementation of the new curriculum began in January and targets grades one to three.
