Popular sports journalist Milton Nyakundi lost his wife on Tuesday evening after drowning in a river along Meru-Nanyuki highway.

Mrs. Rebecca Njoki, the Standard reports, was in the company of three others and drowned after miscalculating her footsteps.

“She miscalculated the footsteps and fell. We shouted asking for help but the river was swollen. I went back to the station to report. They were walking from Nanyuki Police Canteen when the incident happened at around 10pm on Tuesday evening.

Area police boss Simon Kipkeu said the deceased's body was discovered 20 meters away from the spot where she'd drowned and was taken to Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital awaiting autopsy.

Meanwhile Nyamira residents condoled with the veteran journalist on social media, some hailing him as one of Kenya's finest.

"I am saddened to learn the loss of Milton Nyakundi's wife. The news came as a shock to me," wrote David Ombego, a veteran lawyer on Kitutu Masaba WhatsApp Forum.

Kefa Onyinkwa added: "It's sad that my friend Milton Nyakundi lost his wife. Very untimely but God has his own plans."

Nyakundi established his career at Kenya Broadcasting Cooperation before joining FKF as a Communication Officer.
