There has been an ongoing war between Sonko and his Murang'a counterpart Mwangi Wa Iria over which county owns the crucial water reserve.

But speaking in Nairobi on Saturday, President Kenyatta said water in the dam belongs to all Kenyans and asked leaders to focus on how the natural resource can reach to all residents.

"We should desist from politics of water. It is a natural resource that belongs to everyone so what we should be looking at is how we can share the resource," Kenyatta said.

The Head of State spoke at Uhuru Market in Makadara when he kicked off the Nairobi monthly clean-up initiative which is scheduled to be operationalised in all the 85 wards in the city.

Sonko moments later took to social media to welcome Kenyatta's call saying he would do as instructed.

"Thank you President @UKenyatta for your directive on the water debate. Now let’s focus on service delivery to Mwananchi," the county chief posted.

Sonko had on Thursday warned Wa Iria against blocking water supply to the city claiming the dam was a property of Nairobi county government.

Wa Iria has been demanding 25 per cent of all revenue collected by Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company on grounds Murang'a resident needs to be compensated since the water reserve was strategically in their county.
