The Kalenjin community has been basically known for years for its popular beverage called 'Mursik'.

It is made up of sour milk which is stored in a special gourd known by the community as 'sotet'. 

The milk is often cleansed using a particular burning stick which produces charcoal which is then crushed into fine powder and added to the milk. 

Kalenjin community has for years used 'mursik' in feeding breastfeeding mothers as it is believed to restore energy in the body of the mother. Additionally, it is more nutritious and hence best for the breastfeeding mother and the infant. 

The community also believes that the burning stick added to the milk strengthens the bones and is one of the reasons why the community normally feeds their local runners with this beverage. 

The beverage is believed to contain fewer calories or fats and hence makes one physically fit. This adds to the secret behind the common appearance of the Kalenjins majority being slender. 

Mursik has been used for years by the community in the restoration of lost appetite especially among the sick persons and in the provision of bodybuilding substances that helps the person get back to a normal condition. 

The local beverage has hence been embraced for years by the Kalenjin community and is mostly used as a form of identity especially in cultural events such as in athletic championships.
