The task force chaired by Saulo Busolo was established after their exclusion from the task force established by President Kenyatta and chaired by Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya alleging that the former did not have farmers' interests at heart.

Eliud Kakai a member of the task force says bad governance is the problem in the sugar sector.

Kakai says corruption is rife in the sector and this has pushed farmers into a corner and that the government should not sit back and watch as the sector is being run by cartels.

Speaking in Kisumu during the start of the process to panel the report, Kakai said the report if implemented will save the industry from further collapse.

''The problems that are affecting sugar sector in Kenya are pegged on bad governance. Bad governance has led to impunity, corruption and nepotism. As a result, farmers do not get their payments. The factory's output has reduced, machinery cannot be maintained and the government is aware of this.'' noted Kakai.

The chairman of the task force Saulo Busolo says they have brought in a team of experts in different fields within the sugar sector and they are about to come with a solid report.

He says the team will give proper input to the report to solidify their ideas before compiling and handing it over.
