Even as their names have been mentioned in the fake gold syndicate and political temperatures rise, President Uhuru Kenyatta and veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga have opted to remain silent.

In a phone recording allegedly of Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula and a man with an Arabic accent, the names of the two are mentioned.

Dr Ruto and Raila's allies have been trading harsh words over the scandal.

Members of the so-called Kieleweke cautioned the Deputy president against acting as president Uhuru's lawyer, saying that the President could defend himself.

Even with this indirect invitation to defend himself, the president has not said a word on the matter. Raila in spite of appearing in the public has steered clear of addressing the fake gold issue.

The main reason why the erstwhile political adversaries have opted to remain silent is because they appreciate how politicised the matter has become.

By taking a stand on the issue, they risk antagonising each other.

Had the cover of the syndicate been blown before the handshake, they would have been quick to react but now we have a different political reality.

Their silence does not in any way mean that they don't know what is going.

Media reports indicate that the two met with the UAE Prime Minister Mohammed Bin Rashid al-Maktoum and the gold issue was brought up.

The two could have decided that the best way to ensure that the culprits are brought to book is to allow the investigative bodies to do their work.
