Police in Merti, Isiolo county have arrested a couple suspected to have secretly circumcised their 8 year old daughter.
The suspects, currently held at Merti police station, are said to have committed the offence at Manyatta Olagana on Monday.
Merti deputy county commissioner Julius Maiyo said the girl's mother admitted to have performed the procedure.
He noted that the suspects Musa Hassan and Hasna Jillo will be taken to court today. He warned parents in the county against circumcising the female children since it is illegal and punishable by law.
"FGM is not allowed. I call on parents who may be intending to perform the procedure during this long December holiday to stop before the law catches up with them", said Maiyo.
