The lot died on the spot while several others sustained serious injuries after the vehicles they were traveling in collided along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway early this morning.

The accident occurred after a passenger bus and lorry that was ferrying wheat collided head-on.

Both the vehicles caught fire immediately after the collision.

The incident was confirmed by Makueni county commissioner Mohammed Maalim who said both the drivers of the two vehicles were among those who perished.

Maalim said the accident happened at around 12 am.

He said the survivors were rushed to Kilome Nursing Home and Makindu Hospital for medication.

Mukaa acting OCPD Paul Odede said the bus driver was overspeeding when the accident occurred.

Odede said there was too much mist when the incident happened.

He said ten of the bus passengers have not been accounted for, they are still missing.

The police boss said it has not been established whether the ten are dead or alive.

This is to due to some of the victims having been burnt to ashes.

"For now, only nine bodies have been established. We can't say for sure how many are dead," Odede said.

However, residents blamed the county government for not buying every sub-county a firefighting machine arguing that the fire could have been put off in time.
