Ngei was among the people who strongly fought for country’s independence from the colonial government.

He was also among the known Kapenguria six who were detained and served their jail terms after they were accused of supporting and leading the Mau Mau freedom fighters

During their time in jail, Ngei protested to Jomo Kenyatta’s favoritism from the white people.

Instead of doing the same punishments which they had all been assigned as prisoners, Kenyatta was given light duties.

This made him feel bad since they were exposed to hard labor.

Ngei who was then the youngest prisoner with a degree didn’t hesitate to protest against Kenyatta’s treatment.

He formally complained to the authorities about the light duties the late former president was doing.

The late legendary once reportedly pushed Kenyatta to the burning furnace during his protest against the latter's assigned kitchen duties.

Ngei also wrote a letter to Mr. J J de Delmege, the then Lokitaung D.O, addressing him on the same matter.

The D.O replied his letter explaining to him why Kenyatta was assigned kitchen duties.

He was later isolated from the prisoners but that didn’t stop him from protesting against Kenyatta’s light jobs.
