The campaign, the governor says, is aimed at returning the Nairobi City to its former beauty and glory as the "Green City under the Sun" to match other world cities by planting flowers, grass, and trees along major roads around the city and pavements within the city center.

“Nairobi is a commercial hub. We need to invest on transforming it to continue attracting more tourists and investors,” said Governor Sonko during the launch of the programme in January 2018.

Governor Sonko now wants to expand the programme to key roads in each of the Nairobi City sub-counties as well as open its implementation to neighborhood youth groups to promote ownership of the programme and promote the “Ng'arisha Jiji Initiative” among local communities across the county through public participation and engagement.

The competition will see several registered youth groups – one for each of Nairobi’s wards – having at least 100 members or less and based in the wards hosting the roads to be beautified selected competitively, based on capacity to beautify the respective roads, to participate and get paid.

Registered ward-based youth groups willing to participate will need to fill registration forms available free of charge at their respective ward admin and MCA offices at a date to be announced later and closing within 21days after the announcement of this date.

They should indicate the road the group proposes to beautify and justify why it should be awarded the road and its capacity to deliver the work on time.

The governor’s team will select the successful youth groups from March 21, and those teams will be expected to collect the materials – including ground cover, pinker flowers, tree seedlings, and water – which shall be delivered to site.

To win, the groups’ beautification project photos shall be posted on social media and the media. The Beautification Project that shall have garnered the top three most likes from the public, local and international environmental experts shall be declared the winner, first Runners-up, second runners-up, and third runners-up respectively.

The Sh2.5 million prize money will come from Sonko and private sponsors. The four winners of competition shall be announced and awarded their money by Governor Sonko on May 4.
