The company which is doing quarrying of ‘Kagoto’ in the area has been using detonators which residents said is causing ‘earthquakes’ leaving their houses with cracks.

“This company is risking our lives. The detonators are so powerful that we experience earthquakes here every time they detonate them,” Agnes Murugi said.

Angry residents took to the streets demanding that the government closes down the company before it causes a disaster as it happened with Solai dam.

“Our houses are almost coming down. They have been destroyed and nobody is paying us for damages. This man found us here and must leave immediately,” John Kamau, a resident, said.

Veteran politician Koigi was Wamwere, whose Sauti ya Mwananchi Radio studios have been destroyed several times by the impact of the detonators, described what is happening to residents as a result of ‘state capture’.

“When Solai water dams burst and killed over 50 people, I said another disaster was waiting to happen at Kagoto near Heshima in Nakuru town where explosives have just blown up people’s houses. People are now demonstrating against rogue quarry owners who have captured and pocketed NEMA and Nakuru County director of environment,” Koigi said.

The seasoned politicians said the government was giving the issue a blind eye until that time when people will die.

“The company cannot, therefore, be stopped from destroying people’s houses and lives until when 100 people will be killed, attracting government officials and leaders to flock there to mourn and give relief food. Are we so cursed? Those responsible for Solai massacre are responsible for Kagoto disaster that is now unfolding,” he added.
