Residents of Bondeni in Nakuru have raised concerns over alleged grabbing of school land.
Under the umbrella Baharini Community Forum, the residents say it is so shocking that one of the oldest schools in Bonden does not have title deeds.
Through their Chairman Maurice Otieno, the locals say Bondeni Primary school has been affected by land grabbing as some individuals are living in houses within the school.
The locals say the houses belonged to the defunct municipal council and that those residing in them have continued to pay rent to the current county government.
The residents are now calling on the county government of Nakuru and other relevant authorities to step in and ensure the school gets its title deed.
“We still have a conflict at Bondeni Primary school. The county has also continued to receive rent from the tenants yet the school has no title deed and that is why we want this matter addressed” said Otieno.
Similar sentiments echoed by regional National Land Commission Coordinator Frank Kimbelekenya.
The NLC officer says there is a need for serious engagement between the county government of Nakuru and the commission to have the matter addressed once and for all so that the school can have its title deed.
“We have individuals staying in the county houses within the school compound and they pay rent to the county government. There is, therefore, need for us to engage seriously with the county government so that we can have a solution,” said Kimbelekenya.
In April this year, the media highlighted the story after it emerged that fifteen families have ‘invaded’ Bondeni Primary School in Nakuru town and converted part of the nursery section into residential homes.
According to the locals and school management, the families were ‘strangers’ to the institution and are “a great danger” to learners.
According to a survey map of May 28 1953, the school is located on a 10.33-acre parcel of land.
On the map, the school has eight housing units that were constructed to be occupied by teachers. That is where the nursery was located before the families moved in.
