The bank on Saturday announced the phasing out of Sh1000 tender bills, directing that all notes be returned before October 1.

Speaking on Monday, the lawmaker welcomed the move, saying that it will go a long way in wiping out counterfeiting.

He further noted that it is not targeting anyone, only a day after a section of politicians allied to Deputy President William Ruto said detected malice.

"I think it’ll deal with the problem of money laundering. I don’t think MPs should think it's targeting anyone," he said on NTV's AM Live, Monday.

CBK governor Patrick Njoroge made the announcement while introducing the newly designed currency denominations during Madaraka Day fete in Narok Stadium on Saturday.

He said that his office has come to realize that the money is being used for illicit dealings, leading to the changes.

But a group of politicians on Sunday claimed that the plan is to victimize them, daring the CBK to pull the deadline closer.

However, Njoroge said that the Sh50, 100, 200 and 500 will remain in rotation until the new notes come fully into service.
