To most people, old age translates to the time for one to relax and eat the fruits of their faded youthful days.
However, this is not always the case as to others, it comes after no substantial preparation, rendering them poor and helpless.
In Luo Nyanza, such people have devised their own ways of survival which is obviously not working, one of them being endless strolls in the villages and homesteads.
Usually planned in line with meal times, they never go hungry, especially in place where people still operate in a communist way and everybody is welcome as long as they find the family eating.
They have also developed long ears to enable them sniff all deaths in the village, which mean free food for the next few weeks as friends and family convene to mourn.
Therefore, as the youth break their bones dancing to 'Ohangla' in the 'disco matangas', they eat as much as they can, well aware that there might be no death for the next couple of weeks.
To the ones who consider themselves more decent and with successful children in the city, its time to deny their offsprings peace as they demand for upkeep.
Any attempt to talk them into letting their children develop their own lives can easily attract curses as they wonder why they took you to school of you cannot return a hand.
When it gets tougher, they will mark a date on which they will always visit you, especially if you happen to live in a nearby town, being well aware that they cannot go back empty handed.
