According to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), adults should get 7 to 9 hours of sleep each and every night.
But if you visit our Kenyan universities during holidays and weekends, you will find that some students are getting more than the recommended 7 to 9 hours of sleep.
Seeing my roommates on campus sleeping almost all day, I couldn't help but wonder, what could happen if you slept all day?
If you are among those who think that it's a good idea to sleep all day during holidays and weekends, you better think again.
Experts say that oversleeping is terrible for the mind and body. Here are some of the bad things oversleeping could cause:
1. Can cause depression
A study was done in 2014 and it was found that participants who had more than 9 hours of sleep faced a huge risk of falling into depression.
2. It could age your brain
Did you know that oversleeping can age your brain? Sleep specialists say oversleeping could age your brain by up to a couple of years.
3. It could damage your heart
After a number of studies, experts have suggested that oversleeping could eventually lead to an increase in the risk of heart disease.
4. You could be diabetic
Spending many hours in bed can raise the sugar levels in the blood. Type 2 diabetes is caused by this and I am sure you don't want that, do you?
5. It could make you overweight
You can't exercise in bed, can you? Without exercises, you can be sure those unburned calories will accumulate. If you continue that for days, you will become obese.
