Lawyer Ahmednassir Abdullahi has asked the government to compensate for the Wagalla Massacre victims.
In a tweet on Monday, Ahmednassir said that it is saddening to note that the government has compensated detainees during the era of retired President Daniel Arap Moi but the Wagalla victims are languishing in abject poverty when billions have been released by the government to compensate them.
The lawyer also questioned leaders from the region for failing to air the grievances of the victims of the massacre yet they are living under deplorable conditions.
“Kenyan courts have awarded BILLIONS of shillings to MOI era detainees. AG Kihara paid out quickly to those mostly from CENTRAL Kenya. But the 2000 killed in 1984 in the WAGALLA massacre in WAJIR have no judgment and no payment...and their leaders are in JUBILEE @WehliyeMohamed,” he said.
In 2011, The Truth, Justice, and Reconciliation Commission recommended for the compensation of all persons who were affected by the February 1984 attack.
The report indicated that more than 2000 people were rounded up at an Airstrip in Wajir before they were brutally attacked. The TJRC report also showed that around 5000 people had been ferried all the way from Mandera.
The residents alleged that government vehicles were spotted at the scene of the incident. The plight of the victims of the massacre to get compensation is yet to bear fruit several decades down the line.
