Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior has urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to ensure that the nurses' grievances are addressed to avert the ongoing strike.
Kilonzo Junior said nurses play an immense role in Kenyans lives hence deserve better treatment.
He called upon national and county governments to work together to ensure that nurses get justice.
The senator refuted claims that the government cannot pay health workers better salaries because it is broke.
“Nurses are the cornerstone of our health care system. It is a contradiction to purport to promote universal healthcare and treat nurses with such reckless contempt. While we claim we are broke, we are contemplating expanding the executive to accommodate tribal mathematics,” Kilonzo Junior tweeted on Thursday.
His remarks come barely two days since the government threatened to fire all nurses who will not report to work by this morning.
President Uhuru Kenyatta said the strike is unlawful hence nurses are expected at work with immediate effect failure to which they will be sent home for good.
On Thursday, Council of Governors (CoG) Chairman Wycliffe Oparanya reiterated Uhuru’s directive, stating that there are plans to conduct nationwide inspection to identify nurses who will defy the directive.
The nurses have been lamenting over unpaid allowances and lack of promotions at their work stations.
