During the televised talk, the DP commented on various issues among them; war on corruption, his wealth, divisions in Jubilee Party, the firing of Cabinet Secretaries and 2022 general election.

But it is his remarks on the handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga that seem to have angered a section of opposition leaders.

Ruto appeared to downplay the new relationship between the Head of State and his former sworn enemy when he claimed that he had the first opportunity to make peace with the former Prime Minister but he turned it down.

"Before Raila Odinga engaged the President on the ‘handshake’, he engaged me, 4 times, but I declined," he said, explaining he refused the deal since it was being done behind Uhuru's back.

Reacting to the sentiments, Alego Usonga Member of Parliament Samuel Atandi said Ruto was never consulted over the handshake and has resulted to desperation since Uhuru and Raila appears now to have alienated him.

"A desperate William Ruto watching the handshake moment from his office couldn't have rejected the same 4 times. The desperate moment calls for desperate efforts," Atandi tweeted.

ODM director of communications Philip Etale accused the DP of lying Raila approached him, saying the former Prime Minister had never had time for the Jubilee deputy party leader.

Etale further dismissed the interview as a pure public relations exercise.

"The whole interview (1hr 50 mins) was hogwash. Pure PR. Rating 4/10. Tupeni mawe. Nimezoea(Throw insults now, I'm deaf to them)" the ODM spokesperson tweeted on Wednesday.
