Uasin Gishu County’s capital of Eldoret has won the rights to host next year's East Africa Police Games, the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinet has disclosed.
The IG's revelation comes just less than a week after the world’s running nerve and athletics-mad Eldoret town came into a standstill as fans witnessed Eliud Kipchoge writing history with an ‘unimpeachable’ 2 hours 01.39 minutes world record. Gladys Cherono also won in a course record.
That Eldoret will host the games' next year's edition was made public when Governor Jackson Mandago hosted the IG at his office on Friday.
During the meeting at the governor’s office, it was appreciated that Eldoret is the fastest growing urban in the country and plans are underway to set up police stations to better security.
Mandago had emphasized and pointed out a number of reasons why Eldoret and growing urban need to have improved security.
"Eldoret is growing at a very fast pace, population rising and demanding urgent and sustained security," he said.
The IG's response was that at least two more police stations have been approved for the establishment in Uasin Gishu County.
"We appreciate Eldoret's fast growth and for this, we are soon building two new police stations in our program to improve and keep the people safe. This financial year, because of financial constraints, we will build two police stations and then more in subsequent years," said Boinet.
The IG was primarily in Eldoret to sensitize officers on the new changes that have taken effect in the system. He held a meeting with police officers from across six counties in the North Rift.
