Mutunga went into the books of history after upholding President Uhuru Kenyatta’s win in 2013 following a bruising battle with Former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.

1. He was legally married to two wives but divorced both

Dr. Willy Mutunga married two wives but he decided to divorce both of them. The private life of the lawyer became evident when he sought to divorce his second wife Prof Bervele Michele Lax.  He was also once married to Rukia Athman.

2. He was a Christian but converted to Islam

Mutunga was a traditionalist. He later turned to Christianity before converting to Islam. He is now a strong believer in the Islamic religion.

3. His late father was a tailor

Mutunga's childhood is full of bitter memories. He went through hardship to become who he is today.

4. He was detained before the 1982 coup

Mutunga is among the Kenyans who were detained over the 1982 coup. The former CJ was linked to the plot to remove retired President Daniel Moi from power.

He was later released.
