Koigi says that the referendum calls drumming up support for the old guards to continue serving in power are unfortunate.

He opines that the motive fuelling referendum calls by a section of leaders is for them to ensure they remain in power.

“Changing the Constitution so that we give the same leaders a chance to be in power again is not acceptable at all,” states Koigi in an exclusive interview with Hivisasa.

He adds that leaders such as the Wiper Party boss Kalonzo Musyoka who is allegedly pushing for the referendum on this motive should be exiting the scene to create space for fresh blood.

“It only proves that people like Kalonzo and those others who want to remain in power - they should actually be on their way out.

They forget that even after being in the government circles for very long, they did not perform any miracles for us,” remarks the veteran politician from Subukia.

Koigi further says that it will be “a very big mistake for the country” to have the old leaders remains in power.

According to the veteran politician, what the country needs to move forward is a new guard in leadership through the proposed referendum.

“When I talk of new leadership, I am not necessarily saying that it has to be youth leadership or the old only; I am talking of leadership with new ideas, progressive ideas built on foundations that can develop the country and leadership that is dedicated to alleviating teething problems such as corruption, tribalism, never-ending poverty and bad leadership which we do not need any more,” offers Koigi.

The referendum debate is gaining momentum by the day, especially with support by key political players in the country including President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga.

However, it has seen some leaders sharply divided in their opinions on what issues the proposed referendum should address.
